5 Surprises I Discovered Looking At Facebook Demographics
Since its launch in 2004 Facebook has grown at an incredible rate and today it stands at 500 million users. It is hard to believe that an idea that was originally created solely for the use of students at Harvard University has exploded into the biggest social networking site in the world. In my time of using Facebook there are some interesting facts that I have discovered that really surprised me. Many assumptions are made when it comes to a social networking site like Facebook; which is why I was so shocked to learn the following things that I will share with you today.
61% of U.S. Facebook Users are Over the Age of 25
You would think that a site like this would have a mass appeal to the lower age groups but in fact the average Facebook user is 37. I think that the reason for this is because users love to upload their photos and they can keep in contact with each other anytime. The average Facebook user spends a few hours a day on the site and most will be logged in all day at work. This is probably another reason for the average age of Facebook users.
Women 55 and Older are the Fastest Growing Demographic Group
The amount of women over the age of 55 that have started to use Facebook has risen by 175% from last year. This is more than likely a result of the ease of use that Facebook has and the ability to upload photos. Facebook is a way that many people have actually chosen to keep in contact with their families that live long distances away so for some it is a way to keep in touch.
Men Post More Photos than Women
It was surprising to find out that the amount of men that post photos to their Facebook account was higher than women. Men don’t seem like the type to want to post photos but really it all comes down to what types of photos are being posted. While females would be more inclined to post photos of their families or a new baby you will probably find the majority of the men’s photos to involve parties and vacations.
Stay at Home Moms are Also Hardcore Gamers
The amount of females that play games on Facebook really took me by surprise. When you think of a gamer you generally would expect a teenager of even a male to do the majority of the gaming but stay at home moms took the prize. The reason for this could be because they are playing with their children or maybe because they are taking a much needed break, but roughly, all stay at home moms admit to playing a game or taking a quiz at least once a month. 40% of stay at home moms play a game or quiz at least once per week and the majority have listed Farmville as their game of choice.
The U.S. Asian Population use Facebook 20% More than any other Minority
Although the United States Asian population makes up the smallest user group of Facebook they are actually using the site 20% more than any other minority group. The reason for this is unclear but it could involve keeping in touch with families over seas.
Facebook continues to grow every month and have even taken it upon themselves to try to replace Google. As of this writing Facebook is offering their users their own email addresses and is rumoured to be even in the process of creating their own search engine. Maybe one day we will be using Facebook instead of Google and maybe they will be even selling web hosting or resell web hosting the future is unclear. Who knows what Facebook will look like in a couple of years from now maybe by then it will have taken over the world?
